Notice about Layout

The internet is a volatile technical space and changed immensely since the blog started in 2014 and some browser/device combinations now disrupt the layout of this blog. The data sequence is Burial/Memorial Location, followed by the Names. There is a blank space placed after the last name for clarity - but this doesn't work reliably anymore. The image above shows you how to to read entries in this blog

  1. If a soldier's name is listed on the La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre-Memorial does that mean that his remains are there? Trying to locate the final resting place for Pvt. Charles Mizon. Thank you!

  2. I'm afraid not, the memorial is to the men who were not found. More information on the memorial can be found here: http://www.cwgc.org/find-a-cemetery/cemetery/79100/LA%20FERTE-SOUS-JOUARRE%20MEMORIAL If you want to know more about the action in which he fell, then the regimental museum (http://thelincolnshireregiment.org/museum.shtml) should be able to help you. They may well have more information on him as well. Another source of information are his army records (although many FWW records were burned in the blitz). Lastly, you can find a few details at http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/723294/MIZON,%20CHARLES.

  3. The information you give that Private James Killeen 5293 of 2nd Bn Coldstream Guards lies in Aisne VAILLY BRITISH CEMETERY is not correct. He lies in a cemetery near the place he was killed 15.9.1914 in Soupir. There are two cemeteries in Soupir with CWGC graves, one in the grounds of the Church, and a local Communal cemetery in a nearby lane. James is buried with a number of comrades in the Communal Cemetery.

  4. Hi there,

I'll try to follow up the notification at the top as you suggest, but reply here first in case I lose you.

I'm afraid you're wrong, I know because I've been there and found the grave for myself on the 103rd anniversary in 2017 to leave flowers, and thank you note, and take a good photograph because the ones available on sites were "washed out". If you search his name and look at some sites, you'll find the photographs I've put up. I also took the precaution of taking decent photos of all the other graves in case anyone else wanted them.

I also researched some of the other graves, and believe I've uncovered exactly how James died. One of our own shells exploded prematurely killing him and wounding 8 others.

I have more information if you're interested and a possible explanation for the confusion.

  5. Dennis, that's not what I meant. The listings are cemetery first, then the names below. So:

France: Aisne SOUPIR COMMUNAL CEMETERY shows that
5293 Private JAMES KILLEEN 2nd Bn. Coldstream Guards
    is buried there.
It is not, as you original thought, an incorrect report that he is buried in Aisne VAILLY BRITISH CEMETERY.

I checked the CWGC, and they still record him at SOUPIR. If you think that is wrong, then unless the CWGC change their data I wouldn't here.
In fact this whole blog is geared to reflecting the data from the CWGC as at 11/8/2014; I don't have the resources (this is a one man, spare time project) to find out what CWGC change in future. More information in my original post: https://firstworldwaronthisday.blogspot.com/2014/08/why-do-this.html

  6. Yes, I read and follow what you say, The format is very confusing, and it seems to me my initial understanding is the one likely to be assumed by most readers since the details are contained within the same space within the lines.

    1. I've now updated the header of the blog to try to make it cleared Dennis, and used James as the case in point. Trust that's OK

  7. yes, thanks Google and browser developers. it was all good 4 years ago. And on this computer right now (Win10/Edge) the blog post is fine.
But the rendering of multiple line feeds varies between browser and platform. I cannot go back and change everything on a couple of thousand posts; thus the update at the top.
